ABOUT macson
If you’ve seen Macson’s photos and videos, then you probably already have a sense of who he is — someone who loves to explore, create, and tell stories through the mediums of photography and videography. Macson grew up in rural Northern Virginia, then moved to Harrisonburg for college in 2013. In 2016, Macson had the privilege of being named one of 12 North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) college scholars. He and the other scholars - with support from mentors and Canon - worked with the non-profit organization, North Florida Land Trust, to produce a short advocacy video supporting the Osceola to Ocala wildlife corridor, “a 100 mile long, 1.6-million acre landscape of public and private lands that connect the Ocala and Osceola National Forests”. That spring Macson also worked in partnership with the Friends of Shenandoah Mountain, producing a 15 minute film advocating for the conservation of Shenandoah Mountain, a mountain ridge embedded in the George Washington National Forest.
After graduating in 2017 with dual degrees in Digital Media and Environmental Sustainability, he began working at his alma mater, EMU, in the Marketing and Communications department as a part-time staff photographer and videographer. Later he stepped into the role of Visual Media manager where he was responsible for producing compelling photographs and videos to support the many facets of the university — from admissions to advancement and social media to publications, his masterful images were always at the forefront of bolstering the university’s mission. Then in 2020, he and his partner Maddie moved to Santa Cruz, California where they embarked on new life and professional experiences. Macson further honed his photo and video skills, working with a real estate media company based in the Bay Area: Open Homes Photography. While working with OHP, Macson captured many impressive listings with his camera and drone as well as 3D Matterport models. Macson also worked with the environmental nonprofit, Re:Wild on a handful of projects. He helped to organize their photography via a digital asset management system and sourced the photography for a book titled “Wild Life! A Look at Nature's Odd Ducks, Underfrogs, and Other At-Risk Species” which was published by Simon and Schuster. In 2023, Macson returned to EMU where he has since continued to work as the Visual Media Manager, producing engaging videos for various departments across campus and showcasing the student experience. In his spare time, Macson enjoys hiking, snowboarding, traveling, and landscape photography.
